East Iceland as an experimental zone for nature restoration and revitalization of local economies
Anthropogenic appropriation of natural landscapes for resource extraction, such as the construction of the Karanjukar Dam and the establishment of the aluminum industry, has led to the creation of critical landscapes in East Iceland. These critical landscapes are characterized by severe environmental degradation, including the formation of dense
dust clouds, air pollution, declining ecological integrity of lakes and aquatic ecosystems, desertification, erosion, and landslides. The delicate balance of the ecosystem has been disrupted, threatening the survival of native flora and fauna. These adverse effects highlight the urgent need to address the consequences of anthropogenic appropriation and restore the natural resilience of the region.
The aims of this project are to dismantle the Karahnjukar Dam, revitalize the primary economic sector, and nurture a thriving knowledge and research sector in East Iceland. By doing so, the project aims to promote ecological restoration, economic diversification, and scientific progress. It is crucial to address these ecological challenges to restore the natural resilience of the region. To ensure the success of this somewhat radical endeavor, an extensive knowledge and research sector will be implemented throughout the entire area. This sector will play a pivotal role in monitoring and understanding the effects of the proposed changes, including the influence of climate change on the environment. Through systematic data collection, analysis, and scientific exploration, the project seeks to understand the interplay between human activities, environmental factors, and the overall well-being of East Iceland.
